Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
Understanding and following FERPA guidelines provide many benefits for students. Students become responsible for communicating with instructors and staff, developing positive relationships, and building on their self-advocacy skills. By creating an environment to foster growth and build on these skills, students are empowered to become independent thinkers and learners, and ultimately be more successful as college students.
Thank you for your vital support in students’ lives.
What can parents do for students
- Do sign the student’s annual digital form on the parent(s)/guardian(s) section
- Do talk to the student about the dual enrollment class offerings
- Do encourage the student to utilize campus resources, including the welcome center, academic counseling, career services, tutoring, student activities, and the library
- Do help the student understand the importance of registration dates and add/drop deadlines on the Admissions & Records website
What parents cannot do for students
- Don’t log into the student’s email, canvas, and student portal using their credentials
- Don't contact instructors, counselors, and staff on student’s behalf
- Don't complete the GCC application and other college forms for the student
- Don’t seek services, make appointments, and/or attend meetings on student’s behalf
- Don’t ask questions that refer to the student’s academic information, including enrollment, grades, and course history
- Don’t add or drop the student from their courses
*If the student has an IEP or 504 Plan, have them register with the Center for Students with Disabilities to receive services and accommodations.*
