BIOL 50

BIOL 50 Natural History Museum Internship

Offered in Fall & Spring 16-week semester and 5-week Summer/Winter IntersessionInterior of the natural history museum

Students work as interns at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHMLA), which holds some of North America's largest specimen collections. Biol 50 interns at NHMLA learn techniques for collections improvement and management (e.g., specimen digitization, labeling, organization) and conduct specimen-based research projects within one of 13 departments (e.g., Malacology, Dinosaur Institute, Ornithology, Ichthyology).  Research projects can include comparative anatomy methods, using technologies such as CT scanning or electron microscopy (SEM), and/or molecular phylogenetic approaches, from DNA extraction to sequence analysis, to identify new species and resolve evolutionary relationships. Students are invited to participate in museum outreach events (NHMLA’s Haunted Museum, NatureFest, etc.), contribute to papers for publication as coauthors, and present their research results at local scientific conferences.

BIOL 50 Glendale Memorial Hospital Internship

Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center

Fall semester: students complete five one-week-long rotations
Spring semester: students complete three five-week-long rotations

BIOL 50 Glendale Memorial Hospital Internship is a year-long program in collaboration with Glendale Memorial Hospital. Students are paired with a physician mentor. During each four-hour rotation, students shadow physicians, nurses, and other hospital staff in different departments: labor and delivery, ER, surgery, behavioral health, laboratory, pharmacy, ICU, etc. Students meet monthly with GCC Glendale Memorial Internship BIOL 50 faculty advisors

BIOL 50 Internship in Biotech: Cell & Molecular Biology & Microbiology

Students work as interns in a biotech company or academic institution to gain hands-on work experience. At an academic institution (e.g., GCC), students work as a lab technician or with a faculty advisor and apply knowledge and lab skills in cell and molecular biology, genetics, and microbiology to design and conduct independent research to understand how transcription factor, FlhDC, regulates flagella development and movement in a plant-beneficial bacterium and the factors that regulate its expression. BIOL 298 or 141 is a prerequisite. Offered throughout the year.

BIOL 50 Internship in Genetics & Bioinformatics

A semester-long experience focused on plant genetics, beginning with pea plant cultivation, hybridization, and molecular analyses. Students extend this work through molecular biology and bioinformatics approaches, including RT-qPCR and single-cell analysis in R-Studio. In the lab, they perform RT-qPCR experiments to connect classical genetics with modern techniques and engage with current research publications to deepen their understanding of scientific inquiry. This integrated course builds a strong foundation in genetic research, combining computational and wet-lab skills.
